A smart home is an automation home which having and electronic wiring connection with all the equipments that are supported by it so that they can be controlled by just a command. I mean to say that a smart home is home which is like a super home that is controlled by a computer. If you want to switch on your lights then you will not need to go there and switch it on the button but instead you can just sit on the sofa and right away click on a button command your light to get switched on and it will.

Living in a smart home or an automation home is a totally different experience than from living in a normal home or a normal apartment. A common protocol which is known to all as the name of x10 is used to convert your normal home into a smart home. A technology called as power line carrier system is used to take the commands from the module of x10 and then it acts on the device or equipment where the command is to be followed. The main setup or module which is used to make a home into a smart home is x10 and without it a home will not be made into a smart home.

How to turn your Android smart phones into a Universal remote control

Posted by on October 1, 2011 at 11:49 pm

We often lose the remote controls for our many home entertainment components and gadgets, which is why we go out and buy those multi-device, universal remote controls.  Then we lose those, break them, or the kids see what happens when they drop it in a glass of root beer.  But, fortunately, we always have our smart phones handy, no matter where we are.  And, when that smart phone is powered by the Android operating systems, there are applications (apps) that will turn your Droid, HTC Hero or other Android-powered smart phones into universal and WiFi enabled home network component remote controls.

The Android-powered Droid, or other similarly powered smart phones, have apps that act as remote controls for different gizmos, gadgets and some home entertainment PVRs, like TiVo.  However, without an infrared emitter on the smart phone, controlling the television or BluRay player is not possible.  You can control the set top boxes connected to your television, but not the television itself, not the surround sound home theatre system without an infrared signal emitter.

Are Home Networks Destined For Cloud-Based Networking?

Ever since Sanjit Biswas, founder and CEO of Wi-Fi gear maker Meraki shared with me his vision that we are only going to see more Wi-Fi enabled devices in the home, I’ve been wondering how it translates into opportunities, especially for startups.

Among these opportunities could be a very simple cloud-based services for novices to manage and better utilize their home networks. With new developments in networking technology, it’s not that hard to imagine such a service, which would act like a butler for your in-home networking needs.

There are obvious opportunities stemming from Wi-Fi Direct and Apple’s Airplay technologies, but how does one look beyond point solutions and hardware products to find the larger opportunity? The answer came to me during a conversation with Urs Hoelzle, Google’s SVP of engineering at Google.

We were discussing the formation of the Open Networking Foundation and how it was going to help take the radical new technology, Open Flow, from academia to the commercial markets. Open Flow is like the BIOS inside a PC and makes networking gear more programmable. It helps network elements adapt more to the needs of end users who, at present ,are stuck in a one-size-fits-all-world. With Open Flow ,the networking is separated from the device itself and taken to the cloud.
